I feel I am getting progressively stronger, the more I run. Which is natural of course, because the body strengthens and adapts to the stress that you put it under after proper rest. I am reminded of a quote by Bill Bowerman in Kenny Moore's book Bowerman and the Men of Oregon:-
“Take a primitive organism, say a freshman. Make it lift, or jump or run. Let it rest. What happens? A little miracle. It gets a little better. It gets a little stronger or faster or more enduring. That’s all training is. Stress. Recover. Improve. You’d think any damn fool could do it. But you don’t. You work too hard and rest too little and get hurt.”
Anyway, it has come to a point now where I would need to add more mileage to my runs if I want to progress further, run faster. Unfortunately that will not happen anytime soon. With a maximum 45 minutes to work out after work, I have to be creative with my workouts. And since I don't have much creativity, I can only think of fartlek, i.e. varying the pace throughout- running as hard as my body allows (on the inclines), with some "rest" by going back to my usual pace, maybe slowing down a bit to recover, and then upping the pace again.
On a sad note, Steve Jobs has sadly succumbed to a rare form of pancreatic cancer. The founder of Apple, creator of the Mac, the iPhone, among other things. All the money in the world could not save him. I asked myself- would I have had Steve Jobs' life, making millions and dying relatively young? I think the answer lies in what is important to me.
For me, what is important is my family and providing for them emotionally and financially. I love my daughters very very much. I want to be a good father. I want them to have a balanced life- good education, active lifestyle, moderate eating habits, prudent and smart financial sense. To provide for them emotionally, I want to live as long as possible. We can die any time, but I will try and live as healthy a lifestyle as I can. To provide for them financially, I have to be financially smart. So yes, money is important but not at the expense of losing what holds dear to me. Another quote, this time from Christopher Walken in the movies Wedding Crashers:-
"We have no way of knowing what lays ahead for us in the future. All we can do is use the information at hand to make the best decision possible."
This post has 2 quotes already! And I will leave you with more quotes from Steve Jobs himself, inspiring us to go out there and live our lives:-
"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”
“Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.”
“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”
“My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better.”
“Almost everything–all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure–these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
