High Cholesterol

Runners are not immune! Last Saturday I took a blood test to determine my cholesterol level and the results came out yesterday- I have high cholesterol!

If I really think about it, I suppose it can't come as a surprise. I've not been very selective with my food. I just eat anything. I do enjoy the fry-ups. I like greasy, deep-fried food. I don't really watch what I eat. I love fried rice, nasi lemak, roti canai, nasi beriyani, char kuey teow, chee yoke fan, burgers, hotdogs, steak, lamb, etc. One advantage with running is you get to keep your weight down despite eating anything. But I fooled myself into believing that with my daily workouts, I am immune from high cholesterol.

This is a situation that requires immediate action- I will be making a conscious change to my diet. My mother had her cholesterol level reduced the natural way, although this requires self-discipline and consuming the same food at least twice a day for 3 months- oats. Yes, the simple oats. I've done a quick research and this is what I found, in brief:-

"Oats contain tons of beta-glucan. This sticky soluble fiber works by slowing down your food as it passes through your stomach and small intestine. This gives high-density lipoprotein (HDL) more time to pick up cholesterol and whisk it to the liver and out of the body. It also gives low-density lipoprotein (LDL) less chance to move cholesterol to your artery walls, where it can build up and cause problems."

I told my mom about it last night and immediately she prescribed a twice-a-day oats diet. Looks like I will have to bear with it, for now. To be served with no sugar, mind you, just oats and milk.

I had Subways sandwich for lunch earlier. No mayo, no sauce. Just lean meat with vegetables and harvest wheat bread, and some pepper. So, no unhealthy food for some time. I can't do anything about it as I have brought this on my self.

PM19: The other thing besides the oatmeal is to minimise intake of saturated fat and trans fat.

pm19: I also have high cholesterol since year 2000. Not too high, just right above the limit. My LDL is higher and HDL is lower, which is weird coz people who exercise a lot should have higher HDL level.
