Selayang 10k- DID NOT START

Unfortunately, it is true- I did not start the Selayang 10k. The mind was willing, but the head wasn't. Allow me to explain.

After heading to the the Selayang stadium on Saturday to collect my bib number and my t-shirt, I spent the remainder of the day attending RPM class at Fitness First (Wisma SPK), then headed to a Raya do at Tropicana. This house at Tropicana is certainly one of the nicest houses I've ever been to. Then, I went to church before going to my parents for dinner. Went to bed at 11pm-ish. Set the alarm clock for 530am.

Woke up at 530am to a splitting headache. More specifically, the headache felt as if my right eye-ball was literally being pulled apart horizontally. I knew then that it was migraine- something that I occasionally experience, although I'm not sure what triggered it this time. I popped a Panadol, pinned my bib, put on my clothes, and headed out the door. The headache persisted.

I arrived at Selayang around 630am. Did some stretches, and jogged for about 8 minutes. The headache did not subside. Still, I had every intention to run the race. I then performed about 8 x 100 meter strides. Every stride I took made the headache worse. Literally, the pounding headache worsened with every foot strike. Still, I persisted. At 655am I made my way to the starting line. I thought the race would begin at 7am. But when I saw that the organisers were yet to put up the "MULA/START" banner, and coupled with the fact that there would be an aerobic session, I then realised that the race would start at 730am instead. I stayed on near the starting line, performing further strides, stretches and warm-ups. Saw Bee Hon and SJ as well.

Alas, by 715am, I really couldn't take the headache any longer. It had spread to the left side of my head as well, and now I felt that "split" behind my left eye as well. Regretfully, I made the decision to not race, as I ambled dejectedly back to the car and proceeded to drive home. The drive home was a bit of a blur; I just tried to concentrate arriving home as quickly as possible.

Arrived back home at 735am, popped another Panadol, and went straight to bed. Woke up 2 hours later feeling slightly better, although the headache still lingered. By 11am though, it was almost gone.

I do experience migraines off and on although this is the 1st time it has affected my running. After doing some research on it, I've found that Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg suffers from blinding migraines, sometimes resulting in him unable to play. I certainly hope it doesn't affect me come 3rd December. At any rate, by hope or by crook regardless, I will run in Singapore.

I did not run yesterday- headed to the gym to do some strengthening exercises, focusing on my calves and thighs.

Friday I had run another 3 x 1 mile repeats, followed by an easy recovery run. Total approx 10km.

Saturday- lite and easy run.

Plan today- tempo run of at least 20 minutes, followed by easy run thereafter.

Nezz, I didn't miss last year's Singapore, although I missed the deadline for signing up! I used my friend's bib to run in the full marathon, without any proper training! It was one heck of an experience and I completed the marathon having a new-found respect for the distance. I think you can still get away with haphazard training for distances up to 21km, but you really need to train properly for the full marathon, for sure. After last year's experience, this year I decided to be "kiasu" and signed up within the early bird deadline (which was sometime in July).
