Briefly...
Overall I think I’ve been settling in pretty well. I’m leading a nomadic lifestyle at the moment while waiting to move into the apartment on 16 July, and it is a tad inconvenient, but nothing I can’t cope with. Nomadic meaning I need to move between 2 places at least twice a week- when Mrs Rabbit is in Singapore, I’ll pack my stuff and stay with her in the hotel (very central location, within walking distance to the Newton MRT station); when Mrs Rabbit isn’t in Singapore, I’ll pack my stuff and stay with her friend at her apartment located up north in Yio Chu Kang. I don’t have a car to drive around (yet) but this means I get another form of workout- walking everywhere. Plus you hardly get to sit in the MRT trains anyway, so you are on your feet quite a bit. It’s not exactly a cardio workout but at least it is a form of exercise if you don’t have the time to run, like myself at present.
Work-wise, it is only my 1st week here and everything seems to be alright. The lady bosses appear to be decent. One indication of a decent boss is the manner in which s/he deals with the staff. If the staff are generally happy (which appears to be the case in this firm), then everyone’s happy-ish; and you know it will be a good working environment. My boss is concerned about slowly getting me used to the work and the system here, instead of throwing me into the deep end. I am grateful for that. It has given me time to do some reading up (I’ve spent a lot of my 1st week here reading up on certain aspects of Singapore law, reading the cases, etc) and just gaining a little more knowledge. The pace of work here certainly is faster compared to KL but this is already expected, and I am coping. Like running, we need to move out of our comfort zone to improve ourselves. Oh yeah, and Fridays are casual here! I haven’t had a casual Friday since 2001…so it’ll be nice to wear more casual clothes, because it does relax the atmosphere of the office as well.
I haven’t really made friends with the people that work here, but I think that over time, that will change. In any event, I expect to make more friends when I transfer my Fitness First gym membership to Singapore, and when I join the running community there.
Lunch yesterday was with an old uni-mate. We were housemates in my final year (1995-1996) and its good to see him again. 1 hour passed by too quickly as we caught up with each other. I left the office at 6pm and decided to have an early dinner alone. Then, went shopping for the packages offered by StarHub and SingTel. The prices are quite affordable if you’re drawing Singaporean salary. I do expect to have my permanent mobile number, together with Wi-Fi and cable tv (very important for football matches and tv series!) when I move in on 16 July.
Proceeded then to check out Fitness First. There are fewer branches here compared to KL. Apparently California Fitness is more popular here. Dollar for dollar, it is in fact cheaper to have a gym membership here. I dunno, but I think the whole gym culture in KL is more happening, in terms of the energy levels, classes and so forth. Then again, this may be due to fact that there are far more places outdoors to work out. Most parts of Singapore are pedestrian-friendly, and it is not uncommon to see runners on the sidewalk/pavements of the CBD, Orchard Road, or practically any place.
Plan today- lunch with my dad. It’ll be good to meet up with him. I also want to know what has become of my poor Wira which I “crashed” over a puddle on Sunday (and also the repair costs, of course, UGH!). After work, I’ll be taking the bus up to JB, either with or without my dad (gotta check his expected departure time), probably arrive in JB around 9pm-ish; bunk over at the hotel my parents are in (quick explanation- my dad travels to Singapore at least once a month for 2-3 days to conduct some business deals he’s involved in, but he stays in a hotel in JB and public-transports (“PTs”) it down to Singapore for the day, and PTs it back to JB at the end of the day. My mom, whose relatives are mainly from JB, usually tags along with my dad to JB and visits her relatives), and leave for KL tomorrow morning after breakfast. I should be back in KL between 2-3pm. Will do more packing (I did forget to bring a few things) and sort my bills out, get some toiletries. Sunday I’ll be taking the 4pm bus back to Singapore. Actually it is a tad early because Mrs Rabbit will be taking the late flight to Singapore, so once I arrive in KL I will have to check with Nice Bus Company if there is any way I can change my bus ticket and take a later one.
Cough’s finally getting better. I bought Robitussin based on the recommendation of Der dR. and I’m still hopeful that the cough will be gone by Sunday. Speaking of which, everyone in Singapore seem to be sniffing and coughing. The MRT train is filled with coughing, sniffing people. When you’re in an enclosed environment where the level of proximity is literally shoulder-to-shoulder, the chances of contagious airborne germs finding its way to you are pretty high. I have to find a way to boost my immune system, so that my body is not easily susceptible to those germs. I am taking a daily dosage of 1000mg Vitamin C, including other pills, but I don’t know if this is sufficient. Any suggestions?
Anyway Friday’s here! To the PMs running their 30k long run tomorrow morning, have a good workout. Wish I could be there…

Hi there, I stay at YCK too. haha..I'm a california member, but quitting and gonna join fitness first..cali is a lot cheaper but in terms of facilities and service, ff should be better.
Hey Bose, let's try and meet up la! What are your working hours? You work late? Maybe we can do dinner one of these days and we can chat about life here in Sg in general.
Re: Cali Fitness, I was under the impression that it is much bigger here compared in KL. In KL, FF has so many branches compared to Sg. You should check out and compare the facilities between the gyms before deciding whether to join FF. Only reason why I'm transferring is because I'm already a member in KL.
LET'S MEET UP!!!
hey justin...yeah let's meet up. My working hours are like until 6pm. Just let me know you when you would like to meet up for dinner.
Actually I've quitted Cali and joined FF. You can get a very cheap offer at Cali but you have to be at least commit to the gym for 3 years or more. Cali Orchard is the biggest gym around but it is so crowded during evening time. My membership only allows me to use the novena branch, which is smaller and crowded as well.
The reason I rejoin FF is because they have opened a new branch at Ang Mo Kio which is very near to my flat. And another thing is the equipments there are well maintained and clean. Have very comfortable locker area, unlike Cali, you have to squeeze in the locker room and bring your own padlock. The equipments in Cali are also poorly maintained. And another good thing is I can still go FF when I'm back to KL. Hehe.
